12, 3, 1 – Ministry Strategy for Young Life leaders.

I know for many Young Life leaders, it can be overwhelming when talk about connecting with kids.  They maybe at a school sporting event, concert, etc; and feel overwhelmed on how do I connect with all these kids.  We don’t need them to connect with all of them, just a portion of them.  The question is which is the portion they need connect to?

screenshot_109

Jesus used a model of 12, 3, 1 ministry with his disciples.  We can easily transition that into our model of Young Life with kids.  We help leaders connect with their kids.  If you are looking to increase numbers, help leaders identify kids to connect to, or want a strong Biblical strategy for ministry; this fits all of these roles.

Using the 12, 3, 1 Ministry Model – Go through the Biblical view of who are the disciples; who are Peter, James and John; and why did Jesus pick Peter to be the leader of the Church. Each leader has 12 kids that they work with, that NO other leader has relationships with.  Of the 12, 3 are primary focus.  Of the 3, 1 is your total investment.

Nobody wants to be a mediocre Young Life leader. Be motivated!

To finish out the year our area Young Life staff have been reading book Letters to a Young Life leader by Bob Mitchell. He has a great insights on what motivates us as Young Life leaders. It is a MUST read for all Young Life leaders.

One area to look at is what motivates people become Young Life leaders in the first place. There are 3 reason I believe people are Young Life leaders in the first place:

  • Former Young Life students.
  • They don’t know much about Young Life, but they have heard it is a quality organization.
  • They don’t know about Young Life, but they have a heart for kids and Jesus.

Great Young Life leaders have high levels of perseverance and continued faith that Jesus is working in the lives of kids.

1. Their passion and heart for theology and Jesus compels them. These leaders are missional no matter if they were a Young Life leader or not. Their hearts break for people that don’t have the same love for Jesus as they do.

2. Their passion for kids outweigh everything else. These leaders love kids and kids love them. They see great potential in high school and jr. high students.

3. Their history with Young Life out ways everything else. They meet Jesus through Young Life and that compels them to be Young Life leaders when it is hard. Their passion for kids to have the same experience with Jesus pushes them to be better leaders.

How would you evaluate yourself as a Young Life leader? Take this self evaluation to know where you are and where you want to grow. Below are two versions of the same form. The first one is meant to print out and fill out. The second is an interactive PDF where you can fill it out in the document.

5 Ways to make a great Young Life t-shirt.

Young Life t-shirt are a badge of honor in the Young Life world.  You most likely know someone that has a hundred or more Young Life t-shirts.  People go crazy over a well designed Young Life t-shirt.  So, how do you make yours excellent?

T-shirts

I love feeling of showing up at Young Life camp during the summer and having summer staff and/or work crew that want our area Young Life t-shirt for summer camp.  It gives our leaders and kids pride in knowing what they have is valuable.  It creates admiration with other Young Life areas.

Here are somethings we have done to create awesome Young Life t-shirts:

  1. See what is trending.  I used to spend half a day in the mall going from store to store and taking pictures of t-shirts with my cell phone.  Now we can use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc to see what is trending.  See what gets the most likes or retweets.  If you have an idea, invite your Young Life online community to weight in on what they think of it.
  2. See what has been used before and figure how to make it better.  There are lots of good ideas out there for Young Life t-shirts, but with a few modifications here or there; we can make it a wow.  And a wow is what we are after.  Take lots of pictures of Young Life t-shirts and save them somewhere you can come back to them.
  3. Don’t use an inside joke on your t-shirt.  I know people that have been caught in this before.  They create a t-shirt around an inside joke for their area or Club, then a few months later the t-shirt is not the same and the joke has run it’s course.
  4. Invite kids into the design process.  Many times what we think is cool, does not have the same impact as if kids are behind it.  If you have done the Ministry Strategy 41 training with Brian Summerall, you know that inviting kids into the design process is key.  If kids own it and love it, it is a win for everyone.
  5. Don’t miss out on not having Young Life on the t-shirt.  One of the best brand equity things we can do is have a well designed Young Life t-shirt kids love wearing to school.  Make sure it says Young Life somewhere on the t-shirt.  I have seen great designs, but there is no mention of Young Life on the t-shirt.  Don’t miss out on this golden opportunity.

6 promotional items every Young Life area should have on hand.

Everyone one loves Young Life t-shirts. Young Life t-shirts are the crown jewel of all Young Life apparel. It is like Young Life currency between Young Life kids, leaders, staff, etc.  But there are so many other things that we can put the Young Life logo on that will help build the Young Life brand in our communities.

IMG_1161

You will need to figure out if you are going to sell these items, give them away or a combination of the two. If kids are used to paying for Young Life t-shirts in your area then you should sell the majority of these.  But, if you give Young Life kids free t-shirts and apparel, then you should give them away.

I am only saying you need a few of each, on hand.  We are not a camp store.  Use your judgement here.

1. Extra Young Life t-shirts. There will be plenty of places throughout the year where can give away Young Life t-shirts.  Yes, Club; but many other places as well.  Having a few extra on hand can be a great resource for your Young Life area.

2. Young Life hoodies or fleece. We live in a cold weather climate. People in our area wear hoodies and fleeces as much as they wear t-shirts. The need for us to have Young Life hoodies and fleeces on hand is a huge need.  We gave all of the leaders in our area a Young Life hoodie as a gift this year.

3. Young Life car stickers. If you walk through the parking lots at most high schools were they have Young Life, you will see lots of cars with a Young Life sticker in the back.  At one of our high schools, the Young Life students all parked by each other.  On any given day you would see 30-50 cars in the parking lot with a Young Life sticker in the back.

4. Young Life mobile phone & tablet cases.  Custom or logo cell phone cases and tablet cases are hot right now.  You see many companies giving away cell phone cases or tablets cases, if you purchase a certain amount of times or dollar amount in a store.  Or you see companies giving them away as frequent purchased gifts.  A cell phone cases says a lot about what we value.

5. Young Life pens.  Young Life pens should be at every banquet, leader meeting, Campaigners and anywhere else.  Get them made with your Young Life area info on them.  Give them away to others.  Re-order often.

6. Creative promotional products.  How about ear buds with your Young Life logo?  Or sunglasses with your Young Life logo?  The sky is the limit and maybe some resources.  See what kids are wearing or consuming that you can use to creating Young Life branding in your area.

Unfortunately, in Young Life we have to create our own brand equity many times in our own community.  Having the right promo materials for kids, leaders, donors, parents, etc can go a long way in which creating that.  The visual representation of Young Life and the Young Life logo through Young Life gear, can help in the brand equity in your community.

5 uses for Social Media and Technology for your next Young Life leader weekend.

Our region and another region did a leader weekend together, recently. I was part of the planning team for our leader weekend between the two regions. One of our goals for the weekend create to space for leaders to connecting with their teams and learn how to minister to kids more effectively.

Leader Weekend Logo

As a side note, we wanted to have a strong Social Media presence during our leader weekend. So, this is what we did at our leader weekend. These a real world tested ideas.

1. Communicate better before the weekend begins. I sent out an Emma email to all the people signed up for our leader weekend one week before our weekend started. I also sent a text message with a link to the Emma email sent out. We need to communicate with leaders better in all parts of the Young Life ministry. This was one of the first steps in that direction.

2. Create a #Hashtag for your leader weekend. We made a hashtag for our leader weekend (#MCC2013). Do some research and make sure your hashtag idea is not already being used. We used the hashtag in both Twitter and Instagram. It was a great way for our other leaders to see what was being said and shared throughout the weekend.

3. Promote the #Hashtag during the weekend. We did a pre roll for Club each time that had the best Tweets, Instagram pictures from the leader weekend and text to join info. It helped promote what we were trying to do with Social Media during the weekend.

4. Use text messages alerts during the leader weekend. We used a service, which I also use in my Young Life area, called EZ Texting to schedule texts out for the weekend. The text messages were timed before Club starts or any other major things during the leader weekend. We also did a keyword text join throughout the weekend to get the text updates during the weekend.

5. Ask for final thoughts about the weekend with your leader weekend #Hashtag. We asked leaders to send a final Tweet with their reflections on the weekend. It was amazing to see those final Tweets from the weekend and how God challenged our leaders to be better leaders.

6. Create a Google form for a final evaluation. We created a Google form and texted out link as leaders were on their way home. We also sent the link to the evaluation the next day, which was the majority of the evaluations completed. But, we got about 20% of the total evaluations compiled by text message.

Do you have another ideas around Social Media and Technology when it comes to Young Life leader weekends? If so, leave a comment.

3 ways to showcase Young Life on your Facebook profile.

We as a Young Life community of staff, leaders, committee and donors are very passionate about our mission.  The kids we work with often are as passionate or more passionate than we are.  Here are a couple of ways to show your Young Life pride on Facebook.

1. Highlight the Young Life logo in your photos.  You can pick which picture you want to highlight on your bar underneath your profile picture and cover photo.

2. Have your profile picture of you and your Young Life kids.  If kids see themselves in the most prime location, they will feel valued want to share it with their friends.

3. Use one of these Facebook Cover Photos on your Facebook profile.  If you highlight camp, then your kids will most likely as well.  You can download any of these by just clicking on them.

3 Reasons to take a second look at Facebook’s Messenger App for your mobile device.

When Facebook originally released their mobile messaging app, it was not the greatest app in the world.  But, they are making it better and NOW it is a good to great app.  So, it is worth taking another look at, and here is why.

Facebook-Messenger-banner-Google-Play

If your kids, leaders, etc are heavy Facebook users in your Young Life area; using Facebook messenger can be a good communication tool for your area communication strategy.  One ministry team in our area has leaders that are post college, college and high school; all on the same team.  Our team leader uses Facebook as a main communication tool to connect with her whole team.  It works well when you have vastly different age groups on one team together, to use something like Facebook to connect with everyone.

3 Reasons to take a second look at Facebook’s Messenger App for your mobile device:

  1. You can now leave voice messages in the Facebook.  This is still something powerful about hearing the voice of another human we care about.  As your Young Life semester kicks off, leave a Facebook voice message for your Young Life kids inviting them back to Club or Campaigners.  It will be something different.
  2. Use it the Facebook messaging app to make video calls in Facebook.  Video calling has made huge strides over last few years.  Facebook introduced video calling in the web based messaging interface a couple years ago.  The idea that you can now do a video call using Facebook messaging, can help you connect to your Young Life community when you are away.  It could also replace or FaceTime or let you use FaceTime functionality if you don’t have an Apple device.
  3. Use it to communicate with a group when you are on a trip.  The next trip you go on, build a group in Facebook in your web interface.  Then you can message the entire group when you are on the road.  It is a good and easy way to communicate to a large amount of people, when you need to.

Campaigner Lesson on Hope and a changed Life.

We often look for hope in the wrong places in our lives.  Below is an Oprah clip from her show on hope.  Hopefully, this will create a great discussion with your high school or jr. high friends.

Download a copy of this Campaigner lesson, HERE.

Campaigner Questions before the video:

  • What inspires you in life?  When you get this inspiration, describe how you feel?
  • What do you put your hope in?  Why these things?
  • If you were going to rate the issues in your life right now (1 out 10, 10 being high and 1 being low), what would you rate yourself and why?
  • What is the main thing you want to change in your life?  Why do you want to change it?

Watch the Video Above

Read the following Scripture Passages.

Titus 3:7-9 – Today’s New International Version (TNIV)

so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.

Psalm 139:13-15 – New International Version (NIV)

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Hebrews 11 – Today’s New International Version (TNIV)

11 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Campaigner Questions after the video:

  • Describe how you feel after seeing this video?
  • If you are looking for hope, where do you need to turn?  Why turn there?
  • What do you want to change in your life?  What steps are your going to take to change it?
  • Would you want to share this video with other people?  If so, why?

End with watching this at the end of your time together.
